The Taieri Cricket Club was originally formed in 1878. The Club struggled initially with a small membership and financial difficulties resulting in it going into recess in the early 1900's. It was revived in 1929/30 when the present Taieri Cricket Club was formed.
Throughout this period, Taieri has contributed greatly to New Zealand, Otago and Dunedin Club cricket.
The Club has had New Zealand Reps in Barry Milburn and Bruce Blair. Other players who have represented the Club and/or Otago with distinction include Don McKechnie, Bob Maxwell, Denis Brown, Stan Dunne, Bill Gale, Stan Smith, Merv Brookes, Colin Kerse, Wayne Martin, Rhys Cain, David Hunter, Graham Jones, Allan Bligh and Allan Swallow.
Active life members are Doug Milburn, Doug Lyall, Keith Gilmore and Tony Wenlock.
The Club was first promoted to Senior ranks in the 1972-73 season. Under the captaincy of Don McKechnie, they won their first Senior Championship in the 1977-78 season.
Other notable achievements include the first full size indoor practice facilities south of christchurch, the building of new clubrooms, the laying of a new six wicket playing block, the holding of several representive games, and providing the best playing facilities in Otago.
In recent times, the Club has engaged the services of Bernie Maher, an English professional cricketer, as Club Coach. This move has been instrumental in assisting the Club to the strong position it now holds in Dunedin club cricket. Without the generous support of our sponsors, this achievement would not have been possible. The Club is greatly indebted to those businesses.
The Taieri Cricket Club is now setting its sights on the future with continued promotion and fostering of cricket. The Club prides itself on having one of the strongest representations in Dunedin cricket, both senior and junior levels.
